Aquaplaning / Hydroplaning is caused when there is a layer of water built up between a vehicle’s tyres and the surface of the road beneath.
Tyres cannot grip on the road and this causes a lack of traction which means the driver loses control and is unable to steer, brake or accelerate. It can be a frightening experience and can easily cause an accident. Aquaplaning can be made worse by two other factors – the condition of a vehicle’s tyres and the speed that the vehicle is travelling. Tyres with a poor tread, or traveling too fast, will struggle to clear water. If you do feel your vehicle start to aquaplane please bear this in mind;
DO NOT panic DO NOT slam on the brakes DO NOT attempt to drive through water more than 4" deep DO ease off the accelerator DO hold the steering wheel straight DO switch off cruise control (if it is on)
DRIVE SAFE!
